Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits a Pair With Philadelphia University

The pitching of sophomore Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) and the hitting of senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) helped Goldey-Beacom to a 6-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Philadelphia University before a 3-0 loss at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

GBC in the last of the third inning in game one loaded the bases with one out before the game's key play.  Freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) hit a grounder to third baseman Monica Levins, who threw out sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) at home.  But catcher Erica D'Angelo, in her attempt to erase Murphy, threw the ball down the right-field line to allow three runs to cross home for a 3-0 score.

The Lightning doubled their lead with three insurance markers in the sixth.  A grounder from junior Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ) was booted by second baseman Mariah Hans that allowed sophomore Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) to score, junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly and Schoff added an RBI single.

Mickles (2-3) pitched great, allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings with one strikeout.  Schoff tied her career best with three hits with junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) and freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) each getting two, helping the Lightning end with 12.

Nicole Troisi (2-5) was tagged for three runs – one earned – and eight hits over four innings for the Rams.  Stephanie Pepper had an RBI single in the seventh to ruin the shutout.

Naomi Stas was the story for Philadelphia U. (4-12, 2-2 CACC) in the nightcap on both sides of the ledger.  With the bases loaded and two out in the top of the second inning, Stas helped herself by ripping a three-run double to right-center field for all of the scoring.

In the circle, Stas (1-1) was dominant in facing just three batters above the minimum over six innings.  In addition to rapping three hits and two doubles, she struck out seven and permitted just one hit to go with facing only three batters in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Pepper came on the in the seventh and, after a leadoff walk, retired the next three for her first save of the year.

Tower City, PA sophomore Kylie Doyle (0-4) matched her career high with seven strikeouts, but allowed three runs and eight hits over seven innings with no walks for GBC (3-13, 1-7).  Farley got the Lightning's only hit with an infield single.

Goldey-Beacom on Thursday plays its third home doubleheader in as many days, facing Bowie State at 2:30 pm.
