Softball Falls Twice at Kutztown

Goldey-Beacom could not duplicate its opening-day victory over Kutztown and was handed a pair of losses, 8-0 and 6-1, in Kutztown, PA.

Kutztown in game one opened the scoring in the last of the first inning when Danielle Amato lined an RBI single through the right side, scoring Sara Keeny.  The margin grew to 4-0 in the second when Keeny had a two-run single up the middle and Nicki Mann added an RBI single to center.

The Golden Bears tacked on three more runs in the third for a 7-0 lead, courtesy of a pair of long balls.  Bridget Newman smacked a one-out homer and Jacqueline Walsh clobbered a two-run shot.

Kutztown then ended things in the fifth via the run rule.  The home side loaded the bases with one out before Mann's grounder resulted in a fielder's choice, scoring Marissa Lindquist.

Senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) had both of the Lightning's hits and Millville, NJ freshman Alexa Calareso (0-1) permitted seven runs – six earned – and eight hits over three innings.

Keeny had two hits and Savannah Nierintz struck out four over five innings with no walks in the two-hit shutout.

Kutztown in game two scored twice in the last of the second inning for a 2-0 lead.  Amato lined a one-out double to right-center field that scored Walsh and then crossed home when Rachel Lawes added an RBI single to shortstop.

Unfortunately, the Golden Bears brought the home-run parade into the second game as Amato cracked a solo shot in the fourth for a 3-0 cushion.  Kutztown added another run in the frame when Lindquist scored on a wild pitch.

Goldey-Beacom got one run back in the sixth inning for a 4-1 contest.  Juniors Charlee King (New Castle, DE) and Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) each singled before Schoff walked to load the bases with one out.  Sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) then came through with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore pinch-runner Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD).

But Kutztown padded its cushion with two runs in the last of the frame for a 6-1 contest.  Lindquist led off with a home run and Blayse Cholish lined an RBI single to plate Keeny.

King and Mao each had two hits for the Lightning.  East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (1-3) allowed four runs and eight hits over four innings with no walks.

Amato had two hits and Newman (4-1) gave up just three hits over four scoreless innings.  Jackie Morell picked up her first save of the year, allowing just one run and three hits over three innings.

These same schools battled February 27 in Greeneville, TN and it was the Lightning who notched a 5-4 triumph.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday heads to Waterbury, CT for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Post, starting at 1:00 pm.
