Softball Drops Two at Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom battled against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-foe Chestnut Hill before being handed a pair of losses in Philadelphia.

The Lightning were dealt an 8-2 setback in the opener before it fell, 2-1, in a contest halted after 4 1/2 innings by darkness.

Goldey-Beacom in game one struck in the top of the first when freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) scored on a wild pitch.  But Chestnut Hill rallied for two in the last of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Corie Apodaca and an RBI double from Laura Eidam.

The Griffins broke open things with a four-run fourth inning, grabbing an 8-1 lead.  Sofia Cedrone lined a two-run double to right and Eidam followed with a two-run homer.

Tower City, PA sophomore Kylie Doyle (0-3) allowed four runs – two earned – and seven hits over three innings for the Lightning.

Briannen Holloway (1-7) struck out five over seven innings, allowing two runs – one earned – and five hits with no walks.

The Griffins in game two wasted little time with Nicole Carney blasting a leadoff home run in the last of the first.  The margin grew to 2-0 in the third when Cedrone lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Megan Kehr.

GBC got one back in the fourth for a 2-1 deficit.  Junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) stroked a leadoff double, took third on a sacrifice from freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) and scored on Doyle's single down the left-field line.

The Lightning had a great chance in the fifth to tie.  Murphy led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA).  But junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) flied out and senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) grounded out before the contest was terminated.

East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (1-2) permitted two runs and six hits over four innings with a strikeout and no walks for the Lightning (2-6, 0-4 CACC).  Murphy closed with two hits.

Kaitlyn Johnson (2-6) was breached for one run and seven hits over five innings with three strikeouts and no walks for the Griffins (3-17, 2-0).

Goldey-Beacom is back on the road Thursday to visit Kutztown for a 2:30 pm doubleheader.
