Paulynn Mao’s Single Lifts Softball to Split in Tennessee

Junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) lined the go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning of Goldey-Beacom's 7-6 win over Ursuline after the squad opened with a 5-1 loss to host Tusculum at the Pioneer Classic in Greeneville, TN.

Ursuline went up 3-0 in the first inning on a two-out, RBI single to center from Sadie Jones and a two-run double to right by Alison Porter.  The Arrows added a run in the last of the third when Alicia Smith laced an RBI single to center for a 4-0 cushion.

The Lightning made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning.  Mao singled and scored on a throwing error following a single from sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA).  Freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) walked, both runners advanced on a sacrifice from freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ), sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) singled to plate Doyle and Davis stole home.

Ursuline grabbed a 6-3 lead in the last of the frame on Porter's RBI double and a run-scoring single from Kaitlin Krajcik.  Goldey-Beacom (2-2) got those runs back in the sixth on Mao's sacrifice fly and Davis' RBI single.

The Lightning then rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh for their first lead.  Junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch, freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) walked and stole second.  Brittany Humbel then uncorked a one-out wild pitch that scored King for a 6-6 tie.  Mao ensured a very happy bus ride home as she followed with an RBI single to center, plating Murphy.

Sophomore Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) in the last of the frame yielded a leadoff single to Mackenzie Lebeda, but got the next three hitters for the victory.

Brandle ended with three hits and Mao had two.  Mickles (1-1) tossed three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and yielded just four hits.

Porter had three hits and Humble (0-2) was charged with one run and one hit over an inning despite two strikeouts for the Arrows (2-6).

Tusculum in the opener began the scoring in the bottom of the third inning.  Rachel Wisner reached on a one-out throwing error, took second on a sacrifice from Taylor Battle and scored on Carolyn Williamson's infield single.

The Pioneers added three more runs in the fifth for a 4-0 cushion.  Battle scored on a throwing error, Williamson crossed home on a wild pitch and Jordan Keene tallied on a throwing error.

GBC got one back in the sixth for a 4-1 deficit.  King singled, reached second on Murphy's single and scored on a single to center from senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD).

Schoff ended the game with two hits and Doyle (0-1) allowed five runs – two earned – and eight hits over six innings for the Lightning.  King had a hit in all four contests this weekend.

Battle closed with three hits and Williamson had two for Tusculum (9-5).  Eliza Davis (4-3) permitted one run and four hits over seven innings with three strikeouts.

Goldey-Beacom has almost two weeks off before it visits Felician in both teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener.  Game time March 12 in Lyndhurst, NJ is noon.
