Women’s Basketball Falters Late in 61-50 Loss at USciences

Goldey-Beacom gave up a huge run in the fourth quarter and could not battle back in a 61-50 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half led by as many as 12-2 and took a 23-17 cushion into the locker room.  Sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) had eight points and seven rebounds for the Lightning, who held the Devils to just 16 percent shooting (5-of-32) in the half and without a basket for the game's first eight minutes.

The cushion was 29-19 just 2 1/2 minutes into the second half before the Devils exploded on a 21-8 run that ended in a 40-37 margin early in the fourth quarter.  Megan Wolf went on a tear in that span with seven points, Alex Thomas netted seven and Laura Trisch added five.

Sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) made a layup with 7:28 left to give GBC a 44-42 lead, but that was before USciences poured in the next 14 points to grab a 56-44 advantage with 1:33 remaining.  Trisch netted six points in that spurt and Thomas contributed five.

Wolf scored 18 points in the half and went 12-for-13 from the line, helping her squad shoot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the floor and 83 percent (19-for-23) from the stripe.  USciences gained a 44-27 edge on the scoreboard in the half.

Bruno overall ended with 16 points, Bryson had 15 and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and freshman Candice Berner (Frederick, MD) added 12 points for the Lightning, who shot 35 percent (19-of-55) from the floor.

Wolf netted 20 points, Trisch scored 15 and Thomas had 13 and nine rebounds for the Devils (11-16, 11-7 CACC), who only shot 31 percent (16-of-52) from the field but took advantage of going 23-for-27 from the line.  The Lightning only were 6-for-9 from the stripe.

The news got considerably better as Goldey-Beacom (8-18, 8-9) learned Holy Family, trailing most of its contest, rallied to notch a 61-54 victory over fourth-place Chestnut Hill (9-8).  A Griffins win would have eliminated the Lightning from CACC Tournament contention.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays its home finale of the 2015-16 season against Wilmington (DE), starting at 1:00 pm.
