Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scoring Binge Sinks Men’s Basketball at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom's seven-point lead in the second half was undone by torrid three-point shooting from Caldwell in a crushing 87-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Caldwell, NJ.

The Lightning had to take control on the road and did by scoring nine straight points over 2 1/2 minutes for a 46-39 lead with 13:55 remaining.  Senior Algeron Torrence (Syracuse, NY) poured in four points in that span and junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) canned a 3-pointer.

Then in seemingly a short period of time, the Cougars exploded on a 34-8 run to gain a 73-54 lead with 5:43 remaining.  They did it with the long ball, converting their first six 3-point attempts en route to shooting 12-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-9 from beyond the arc in that time.

Ned Ogoemesim was unconscious in that stretch with 16 points and Salvatore Vitello netted 11 for Caldwell, which shot 8-of-11 from 3-point range in the second half and 13-of-24 overall.  The home side shot 66 percent (19-of-29) from the floor in the second half for a 56-40 edge on the scoreboard and 53 percent (31-of-59) overall.

Ogoemesim overall scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting with 12 rebounds and Vitello netted 22 points, going 6-of-7 from beyond the arc, to go with nine assists for the Cougars (9-14, 7-9 CACC).

Wilson scored 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting with four 3-pointers and freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) added 21 points and nine rebounds for GBC, which shot 41 percent (14-of-33) from the field.

The crippling setback drops GBC (8-17, 6-10) two games behind Chestnut Hill (8-8) for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot from the South Division with just three games left.

Goldey-Beacom is back on the road Wednesday at University of the Sciences as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
