Women’s Basketball Pulls Out All the Stops in Victory Over Dominican

Goldey-Beacom relied on great play up and down the bench in getting its third win in the last four games, a 76-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Dominican (NY) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Playing with a depleted lineup due to injuries, the magnificent seven shot 53 percent (18-of-34) from the floor in the first half and 42 percent (24-of-57) overall.  GBC (8-16, 8-7 CACC) moved into a tie with Chestnut Hill (8-7) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot and both are one-half game behind University of the Sciences (9-7) for third.

The Lightning raced to a 43-21 halftime lead by limiting the Chargers to only 35 percent shooting (9-of-26) and just 3-of-9 from three-point range.  Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) scored 15 points in the half on 6-of-12 shooting with fellow sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) adding 12 and seven rebounds.

GBC led by as many as 27 in the third quarter and held a 63-41 cushion with 8:29 left in the game on Bryson's layup.  But that would be the Lightning's final basket and they had to rely on free throw shooting the rest of the way.

Dominican used a 19-5 run by shooting 6-of-11 from the floor to close to 68-62 with 1:13 left.  Deja Gabbidon netted six points in that span and Stefani Alston added five for the Chargers.

But Goldey-Beacom scored the next five points with Bruno hitting four free throws to gain a 73-62 cushion with 25 seconds left and clinch the win.  During the final 8:29, Bruno shot 6-for-6 from the stripe and Bryson went 4-for-4.

Bryson scored 24 points on 7-of-10 shooting, went 10-for-11 from the line and hauled in nine rebounds over 38 minutes.  Bruno had 21 points, shot 8-for-9 from the line, grabbed nine rebounds and dished six assists over 36 minutes.  Freshman Candice Berner (Frederick, MD) scored 10 points and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added eight for the Lightning, who canned 82 percent (23-for-28) from the line.

Gabbidon had 23 points and 19 rebounds with Jacqueline Rywalt and Shannon McGill adding 11 points for the Chargers (11-13, 7-8), who shot 42 percent (27-of-64) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom has less than 48 hours to prepare for a Saturday contest at Caldwell, which starts at 1:00 pm.  Caldwell won both of last year's contests which each went to overtime, including the CACC quarterfinals.
