Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short in 69-63 Loss to Dominican

Goldey-Beacom gave up the lead midway through the second half and could not get it back in a 69-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Dominican (NY) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Dominican established momentum in the opening half with a 22-10 run for a 33-18 lead with 3:24 left.  Gerrel Irvin was just getting warm with 14 points in that span on 6-of-8 shooting to help his squad can 50 percent (8-of-16) of its attempts in that time.

They it was Goldey-Beacom's turn to respond with a 21-5 spurt and grab its first lead since early in the contest, 39-38 with 17:22 to play.  Junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) and junior Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ) each netted seven points in that span to help their squad shoot 7-of-11.

The contest remained close the rest of the way and the Chargers looked to be in great shape when Koree Hargraves made 1-of-2 from the line for a 63-59 lead with 1:52 to play.

The game then turned into a free-throw-shooting contest with neither squad making a field goal in the last two minutes.  Wilson knocked down two from the line with 1:30 left and Dominican's Joe Clinton followed suit with 66 seconds remaining for a 65-61 game.

Freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) made 1-of-2 for GBC with 48 seconds to play for a 65-62 deficit.  Now it was time for a stop, but Clinton rebounded his own missed shot and went to the line for two.

However, he missed both free throws and the Lightning called timeout with a chance to tie.  Wilson then drove to the goal and was fouled, just having his layup roll off the rim and a chance for a three-point play with 8.8 seconds left.  He made 1-of-2 for a 65-63 game, but Irvin capped his standout night by hitting twice with 7.8 seconds remaining for a 67-63 contest.

Irvin was unbelievable in getting 31 points on 12-of-17 shooting and 16 rebounds over 35 minutes.  E.J. Smith added 11 points off the bench for the Chargers (9-15, 8-7 CACC), who shot 54 percent (22-of-41) from the floor and 20-for-28 from the line.

Wilson scored 14 points and hit five free throws to give him 106 this season, moving him into a tie for fifth place in school history with Donte McGill from the 2013-14 campaign.  Senior Algeron Torrence (Syracuse, NY) had 13 points and nine rebounds with Taite adding eight points for the Lightning, who shot 43 percent (22-of-51) from the floor and owned a 30-27 rebounding edge.

GBC (8-16, 6-9 CACC) now sits one game behind Chestnut Hill (7-8) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot from the South Division with four games left.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday at Caldwell for a 3:00 pm contest.
