Britani Bryson’s Layup Gives Women’s Basketball 70-67 Win at NYIT

Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) hit the go-ahead layup with 29 seconds left and Goldey-Beacom stayed red hot with its fourth straight win, 70-67 at New York Tech in Old Westbury, NY.

Goldey-Beacom in the second quarter scored 12 straight points over 3 1/2 minutes to turn a three-point deficit into a 32-23 lead with four minutes left.  Bryson hit three consecutive layups in that spurt and freshman Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA), the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, ended it with a layup.

Bryson closed the quarter with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting to help the Lightning outscore the Bears 22-6.  GBC for the half shot 46 percent (16-of-35) from the floor and New York Tech shot just 36 percent (11-of-31) with eight turnovers.

NYIT in the third quarter went on an 18-4 run to open a 51-48 lead at three-quarter time.  Margaret Knollmeyer scored six points in that span and Julie Williams added five for the Bears, who outscored the Lightning 24-9 in the period.

GBC was down 64-56 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining before scoring the next 11 points for a 67-64 lead.  Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ), the defending CACC Player of the Week, netted four points in that spurt and freshman Destiny Harper (Mount Solon, VA) showed her clutch play on a go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds left.

The Bears displayed great resiliency on the other end of the floor, getting a tying 3-pointer from Knollmeyer with 50 seconds to play for a 67-67 contest.

The Lightning came back and looked in great shape with Bryson attempting two free throws.  Despite missing both, Bartlette came through with a huge offensive rebound and the visitors still were in business.  Bryson got her reprieve by taking the ball and hitting the decisive shot for a 69-67 lead.

GBC (5-5) then needed a stop on the other end and got it when Harper made her second great play in the final minute, drawing a charge from Sofia Georgiadi with 18 seconds left.  The Bears were forced to foul on the defensive end and hacked Bryson, who went 1-for-2 from the stripe with 16 seconds remaining for a 70-67 contest.

NYIT had a chase to escape and force overtime, but Williams missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give GBC its first victory in three all-time meetings.

Bruno nearly posted a triple-double by closing with 17 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds over 39 minutes.  Bryson finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season – all in the last six games – junior Marisa Howard (Twinsburg, OH) netted 12 points and Harper added 11 for the Lightning, who shot 45 percent (28-of-62) from the field.

Bruno now is 10th in school history with 181 career free throws.  It is the sixth category in which she is in the top 10.

The Bears wasted a solid performance from Knollmeyer, who scored 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting to go with seven rebounds.  Shanice Allen added 10 for NYIT (5-5), which was handed its third straight loss.
