Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bruno and Bryson Buoy Women’s Basketball to Fifth Straight Win, 77-65 Over Shepherd

The dynamic duo of juniors Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) and Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) combined for 48 points and Goldey-Beacom pulled away in the fourth quarter for its fifth straight victory, 77-65 over Shepherd at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning (6-5) looked like they were in impeccable shape with 2:49 left in the third quarter when Bruno hit a layup, giving her squad a 52-43 lead.  But the Rams scored the next nine points for a tie game late in the period, thanks to Morgan Arden and Sammy Bane each hitting 3-pointers.

The game was still tied, 57-57, with six minutes left before GBC took over.  Bruno again was the catalyst, taking matters in her own hands with two 3-pointers to start a 14-3 run spanning 3 1/2 minutes that gave her squad a 71-60 lead with 2:35 remaining.

The fourth quarter was the difference as the Lightning gained a 23-13 edge on the scoreboard by shooting 57 percent (8-of-14) from the floor and limiting the Rams to only 29 percent (5-of-14).  Bruno almost had as many points as Shepherd in the period, netting 11 with a pair of 3-pointers.

Bruno, the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, ended with 28 points – two short of her career high – on 10-of-18 shooting to go with six assists and three 3-pointers over 40 minutes.  She moved into seventh place in school history with 1,189 career points and sixth with 424 field goals.

Bryson finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds, completing her fifth double-double of the year and third straight at halftime with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  She moves into a tie for seventh in school history with 613 career rebounds.

Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA), the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, scored nine points and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added eight for GBC, which shot 46 percent (31-of-67) from the floor.

Liz Myers had 14 points and nine rebounds, Arden netted 13 points and Cara Mason contributed 10 for the Rams (3-6), who shot 44 percent (25-of-57) from the field but were beset by 21 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom is home Monday against New Haven, starting at 6:00 pm.  The men play at 8:00 pm vs. Pace.
