Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Holds on for 79-73 Triumph Over AIC

A rapid first half turned into a battle of attrition in the second with Goldey-Beacom finally getting across the finish line ahead, 79-73 over American International at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (3-2) in the first half roared to a 39-24 lead by going 12-for-15 from the line with AIC amassing just an 0-for-1 mark.  Seniors Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY), Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) and Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) all scored nine points in the half for the Lightning, who shot 41 percent (12-of-29) from the field.

The Lightning owned a 63-53 lead with 5:30 left before the Yellow Jackets (2-5) used an 18-11 run to pull within 74-71 with 24 seconds remaining.  Justin Daniel, Tahlib Swan, Jayvon Pitts-Young and Bruce Spruell all netted four points in that span.

But Williams once again came through by knocking down two free throws with 21 seconds to play, securing the Lightning's third victory this season against four Division I schools.

Tillman, Williams and sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) all scored 16 points for the Lightning, who only shot 37 percent (21-of-57) from the field but went 32-for-41 from the line.  Wilson scored 15 points and senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) added 10 and six assists.

It was Goldey-Beacom's first game since Tillman threw in a 65-foot shot at the buzzer in Tuesday's 71-68 overtime win at U. of the Sciences.  The play was voted the tenth-best on ESPN's Top Plays the next day.

AIC also was coming off an overtime victory, less than 24 hours ago at Holy Family.  Justin Daniel closed today with 18 points, Pitts-Young netted 14, Swan had 14 and Spruell kicked in 11 for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 52 percent (25-of-48) from the floor and 14-for-21 from the line.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Georgian Court as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
