Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Dealt 53-41 Setback at University of the Sciences

A couple of solid defensive performances turned into an offensive game in the fourth quarter, but Goldey-Beacom could not make enough shots and was handed a 53-41 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

The Lightning closed to 38-32 just 30 seconds into the fourth quarter when junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) converted a layup.  But the Devils took control with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, opening a 50-34 lead with 4:15 remaining.  Sarah Abbonizio scored five points in that spurt with Alex Thomas adding a 3-pointer.

Bryson had 15 points and 10 rebounds for her 20th career double-double, junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) netted 10 points and freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) added seven for the Lightning (1-4, 1-1 CACC).  Bryson and Bruno each were named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for last week.

Abbonizio had 17 points and six rebounds, Thomas netted 14 and Laura Trisch added nine for the Devils (6-0, 1-0), who only shot 28 percent (8-of-29) from the field in the opening half but hit for 59 percent (13-of-22) in the second.

It was the Lightning's third game at Bobby Morgan Arena this season after losing to Franklin Pierce and American International in the USciences Tip-Off Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Sunday face Bowie State for a 1:00 pm contest.
