Tillman’s 65-Foot Shot Lifts Men’s Basketball to Incredible Win at USciences

(ESPN No. 10 Top Play)

(Video -- Winning shot at 1:47:00)

In a game that seemed won and lost by both teams, it took an incredible shot from the most unlikely of players to bring a stunning conclusion.

Senior 6'8" center Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) hit a three-quarter-court shot at the buzzer in overtime that brought Goldey-Beacom an unbelievable 71-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Sophomore Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ), playing his first game of the season, hit the second of his two huge 3-pointers to give the Lightning a 61-56 lead with 5:32 left in regulation.  Beni Toure made a layup with 4:38 remaining to bring the Devils within 61-58 before senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) restored the five-point margin on a layup with 3:39 to play.

A bevy of misses kept it a 63-58 game before what could have been the game's pivotal moment with 48 seconds left in regulation.  Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) stepped to the foul line and made the front end of a one-and-one, but an inadvertent buzzer sounded and the officials waived off the point.  Taite then missed the redo and the Devils' Will Gregorits hauled in the rebound.

Brandon Hathaway missed a 3-pointer for USciences and Gregorits came up with another huge rebound.  After the latter missed a layup, Brendan Crawford grabbed the rebound and his follow with 33 seconds remaining cut the margin to 63-60.

The Lightning then looked to get the ball in, but senior Khalil Keel (Philadelphia, PA) threw it to the Devils' Jon McGill.  The latter then knew what to do, stepping to the left wing and canning the tying 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to force overtime.

Crawford provided the extra session's third lead change on a jumper with 28 seconds left for a 68-67 contest.  Taite then made 1-of-2 from the line with 16 seconds remaining for a tie game and after Gregorits missed a layup, the ball went out of bounds with 2.4 seconds left in favor of GBC.

That all set up the wild finish.  Tillman got the ball from senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE), took one dribble and launched one from 65 feet that went in for the unbelievable triumph.

Taite finished with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) scored 10 points and Tillman had his first career 3-point attempt for the Lightning (2-2, 1-1 CACC), who shot 44 percent (29-of-66) from the floor and snapped their six-game skid vs. the Devils (1-4, 0-1).

Gregorits closed with 20 points and 17 rebounds, McGill scored 19 points and Crawford added 16 for the Devils, who shot 47 percent (29-of-62) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday against American International, starting at noon.
