Tillman and Wilson Lead Men’s Basketball to 74-69 Win Over Millersville


 
Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) went on a tear with a career-high 22 points and fellow senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) made two huge defensive plays in the final minute for Goldey-Beacom, which notched a 74-69 victory over Millersville at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The third and final tie of the saw the scoreboard read 69-69 with 2:26 left when Lightning sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) rebounded Jon Lott's missed 3-pointer.  Taite then took his time before hitting a layup with 2:05 left for a 71-69 lead, the contest's 12th lead change.
 
Millersville's Conrad Chambers then lost the ball to senior Khalil Keel (Philadelphia, PA) and the fast-break was on.  Junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) tipped Keel's pass to senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD), who laid it in for a 73-69 game with 1:32 remaining.
 
After a series of misses, the Marauders had the ball in the final minute still down four.  Cornell Yarde II looked to drive, but Wilson came through by drawing an offensive foul with 30 seconds left for a huge turnover.
 
The Lightning (1-1) then committed a turnover before Amadou Kaba got an offensive rebound of Yarde's 3-pointer.  Kaba then went up in the lane, but Wilson got all ball and the possession arrow in favor of GBC caused the turnover with 13 seconds remaining.
 
Wilson made 1-of-2 from the line two seconds later for the final.
 
Tillman simply could not be stopped, making his first eight attempts and shooting 10-of-12 from the floor to go with nine rebounds and two blocks over 24 minutes.  Williams scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, Keel netted 11 points with Wilson adding nine and eight rebounds.
 
The Lightning shot 54 percent (33-of-61) from the floor, including 68 percent (19-of-28) in the first half when they opened a 42-32 halftime lead.  GBC overall shot 29-of-50 from two-point range.

The victory also was the first for head coach TJ Dekmar.  This is his second year with the program after serving last season as an assistant.

 
All five scorers for the Marauders (0-1) reached double figures.  Yarde had 16 points and nine rebounds, Lott, Chambers and Marcus Adkison each netted 13 points with Kaba adding 10 for Millersville, which shot 41 percent (27-of-66) from the field.
 
Goldey-Beacom plays its home and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener Wednesday against Philadelphia U. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
