Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Opens Season With 68-59 Loss to Franklin Pierce

Goldey-Beacom's 2016-17 debut resulted in a strong showing, but it was not enough in a 68-59 loss to Franklin Pierce in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning grabbed a 34-33 lead in the opening minute of the second half when junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) canned a jumper.  But the Ravens poured in the next 15 points over 5 1/2 minutes to open a 48-34 lead with 3:53 left in the third quarter.  Dana Campbell nailed a pair of 3-pointers in that span, finishing with eight points.

GBC closed to 59-54 with 4:30 left when junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) hit a layup.  But Franklin Pierce had an answer when Sarah Middleton drilled a 3-pointer on the next possession and her squad was never headed.

Bruno, picked first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference a season ago, scored 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.  She is just 14 points shy of becoming just the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

With four assists today, Bruno now has 294 career to move into second place in team history.

Bryson had 12 points and nine rebounds with junior Margherita Giubieli (Cesena, Italy) grabbing six rebounds in her debut for the Lightning (0-1), who shot 36 percent (24-of-67) from the floor.

Campbell scored 19 points, Mya Mosley poured in 17 off the bench, Middletown netted 10 and Alison Palma hauled in 12 rebounds for the Ravens (1-0), who shot 41 percent (24-of-59) from the field and hit seven 3-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom is right back at it Saturday against American International, also on the campus of University of the Sciences.  Game time is noon.
