Men’s Basketball Battles Valiantly in 64-56 Loss at Delaware

In the squads' first meeting that counted, Goldey-Beacom played its heart out and gave Division I Delaware all it could handle in a 64-56 loss in Newark, DE.

After multiple encounters that were preseason affairs, the Lightning and Blue Hens finally went at it for real.  The opening-night jitters were apparent on both sides with Goldey-Beacom's TJ Dekmar and Delaware's Martin Ingelsby each making their head coaching debuts.  The Lightning did their best in holding their own, but found themselves down 31-20 at halftime.

Senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) kept Goldey-Beacom in the contest with seven points over the first 20 minutes, but his squad only shot 19 percent (6-of-31) from the field in that span and just 3-of-15 from 3-point range.  Cazmon Hayes netted 10 points in the half on 4-of-5 shooting for the Blue Hens, who shot 38 percent (9-of-24) from the floor and owned a 29-16 rebounding edge.

The Lightning for the fifth time in second half closed within one, getting two free throws from senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) for a 52-51 deficit with 4:05 remaining.

But the Blue Hens rattled off the next six points for a 58-51 lead with 2:28 to play.  Darian Bryant hit two free throws before Devonne Pinkard and Eric Carter each made layups.

Senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) hit a big driving layup for GBC with 2:03 left and sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) added a free throw 36 seconds later for a 58-54 deficit.  The Lightning's defense then stepped up with the Blue Hens committing a shot clock violation that continued the visitors' momentum.

Wilson looked to capitalize, but his short jumper went in and out and then it became a free-throw-shooting contest.  Delaware hit 6-for-8 from the line over the next 38 seconds to ice it with Pinkard going 4-for-4.

Wilson and Williams scored 11 points apiece with Ridgeway-Higgs and senior Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) getting 10 each for the Lightning (0-1), who shot 48 percent (13-of-27) from the floor after intermission but just 33 percent (19-of-58) for the game.

Carter ended with 14 points and 15 rebounds, Hayes scored a game-high 16 points and Bryant added 13 for the Blue Hens (1-0), who shot 46 percent (10-of-22) from the field in the second half and 41 percent (19-of-46) for the game.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday plays its home opener against Millersville, starting at 1:00 pm.
