Men’s Soccer Season Ends With 3-0 Loss at Wilmington in CACC Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom more than hung tough with local rival Wilmington in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals, but surrendered two second-half goals for a 3-0 loss in Newark, DE.

The third-seeded Wildcats in the first half controlled most of the play and were very patient looking for a great shot.  They got it in the 24th minute when Lorne Bickley received a perfect ball from Juan Bernal and buried it for his 12th goal of the season.

The lead going into the locker room stayed that way thanks to GBC sophomore and first team All-CACC goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa), who flat robbed Sam Jester with a kick save in close during the 41st minute.

No. 6 seed GBC held most of the possession in the second half and the contest was played mostly on Wilmington's side of the field.  The visitors had their chances, especially when freshman Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) had his shot in the 58th minute just go over the bar and senior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) was denied by goalkeeper Vinny Tasca in the 65th minute.

But Wilmington broke through in the 79th minute for a 2-0 cushion.  Elliot Johnson sent Jamie Burridge on a long breakaway and the latter won a head-to-head battle with Bismilla for his sixth goal of the season.

Jester got his revenge in the 85th minute with his fifth goal of the year off a pass from Deron Joe for the final.

Bismilla played solidly with a pair of saves for the Lightning (9-7-2), who were in the conference tournament for the second straight year.  That feat had not been accomplished since going three consecutive seasons from 1999-2001.

Through two seasons, Bismilla is sixth in school history with 131 saves.

Tasca ended with four saves for Wilmington (12-5-1).
