Women’s Tennis Headed to CACC Final With 5-0 Win over USciences

Goldey-Beacom won all three doubles matches and then cruised through two singles rubbers to advance to its fifth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final, 5-0 over University of the Sciences in Media, PA.

The Lightning had to withstand a six-hour weather delay and a venue change to finally clinch their semifinal. GBC will play No. 3 seed Post in the final Sunday at 1:00 pm on the campus of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

GBC, the top seed for the first time in school history, matches its best start in team history after also opening 8-0 during the 2010-11 campaign. It is looking for its first CACC crown after also advancing to the final in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014.

Third doubles was the first to close with freshmen Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) moving to 7-0, thanks to an 8-0 thrashing of Gabbie Soriano and Jillyan Serrano. Seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) then improved to 8-0 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 triumph vs. Elkanah Linder and Abby Gamarnik. This included Sengl serving out a lengthy 12th game which featured so many deuces the author lost track.

The No. 2 doubles rubber might have been the backbreaker as junior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) battled Karla Miletic and Julia James to a tiebreaker before claiming a 9-8 (7-4) win.

The singles portion was no contest. Sengl improved to 8-0 at singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three over James before Silvia Hortelano Pey moved to the same mark with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Soriano at number five.

The Devils end the fall at 11-5.
