Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bruno Climbs the Record Book for Women’s Basketball in Win Over Nyack

Goldey-Beacom raced to an 11-point lead after the first quarter and thwarted a minor bump in the road for an 81-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were on cruise control in the opening period, sprinting to a 22-11 lead by shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) from the floor and going 9-for-11 from the line.  Sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) was the spurt's catalyst, netting eight points that included going 6-for-7 from the stripe.

The Warriors shot just 31 percent (4-of-13) in the quarter and committed seven turnovers.

Nyack closed to 27-23 early in the second quarter, but order was restored when GBC used a 16-8 spurt in just over seven minutes for a 43-31 cushion late in the half.  Sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) poured in six points in the run.

In grabbing a 43-33 halftime lead, GBC shot 44 percent (12-of-27) from the floor and Nyack hit 43 percent (13-of-30).  But the Lightning owned a huge edge at the line, going 15-for-18 in that span with the Warriors posting a 4-for-6 showing.

Goldey-Beacom held a lead of at least seven points the rest of the contest for its fifth victory in its last six contests with Nyack.  It shot 47 percent (14-of-30) from the floor after intermission and the Warriors hit only 39 percent (13-of-33).

Bruno ended with 23 points and now has 831 career, moving into ninth place on the school's list.  She also hit one 3-pointer and now has 116 career, tied for third in team annals with Natasha Scott (2004-08).

Bryson had 21 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the campaign and 16th career.  She also had a blocked shot that gives her 67 career, one in back of fourth place in GBC history.

Freshman Candice Berner (Frederick, MD) tied her career best with 13 points and junior Jazz Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) added 11 for the Lightning, who shot 46 percent (26-of-57) from the floor and 71 percent (24-for-34) from the line.

Jamie McKeither had 17 points and eight rebounds, Mariah Brown also netted 17 points with Raven Makins adding 12 and nine rebounds for the Warriors (6-13, 4-8 CACC), who only went 11-for-17 from the line and committed 18 turnovers.

GBC (6-15, 6-6) remains tied with Chestnut Hill (6-6) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot in the CACC South Division with seven games left.  University of the Sciences (7-6) leads each by one-half game for third and Wilmington (6-7) only is one-half game behind of the aforementioned duo.

Goldey-Beacom continues its four-game homestand Wednesday against reigning-league-champion Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game starts at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's 8:00 pm contest.
