Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt Heartbreaking 67-65 Loss by Nyack

Goldey-Beacom rallied from a double-digit hole in the final minutes to forge a tie, only to give up the deciding layup in the closing seconds for a tough 67-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Nyack at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Nyack scored 13 straight points and held GBC without a basket for almost four minutes late in the first half for a 35-21 lead with 2:25 remaining.  Jaron Smith went on a tear with back-to-back 3-pointers in the run and Imran Ritchie added four points.

The Warriors led by as many as 15 points early in the second half and held a 62-50 cushion with 6:57 left.  But that's when the Lightning got their engines going, scoring nine straight points in just over three minutes to close to 62-59 with 3:38 left.  Junior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored four points in that run and freshman Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ) added three free throws.

Robert Tyler made one free throw and Shawn Witherspoon hit a layup to give the Warriors a 65-59 lead with 2:42 remaining.  After junior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) missed a 3-pointer for GBC, freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) got the rebound and made a free throw with 1:59 to play for a 65-60 contest.

Tyler committed a turnover on the Warriors' next possession and Taite again was there, getting a layup with 1:34 to go for a 65-62 deficit.  The Lightning needed more help to get the ball back and got it when Smith missed the front end of a 1-and-1, giving the home side a chance to tie.

GBC did not call timeout and was very patient.  Instead of the two, the Lightning went for the tie and junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) delivered on a 3-pointer from the right wing with 58 seconds left for a 65-65 deadlock.

Now it was Nyack's turn to respond and attempt to quiet the noisy partisan gathering.  The visitors worked down the shot clock and got the ball in Tyler's hands.  He drove and fed a pass to Ga'Briel Chandler, who faked his defender and made a layup with 35 seconds left for a 67-65 game.

After the Lightning used their final timeout, Taite again was called upon to resurrect his squad.  But his driving layup was swatted out of bound by Frank Martin with 15 seconds left.  GBC on the inbounds tried running the same play to the left side, but Martin again was there to reject Taite's shot that also went out of bounds.

GBC this time looked to Wilson up top, but his 3-pointer for the lead bounded off the rim and Smith hauled in the rebound with three seconds left.

Smith then missed another front end of a 1-for-1 and the ball went out of bounds in the Lightning's favor with one second left.  GBC had no timeouts and looked for a prayer, but Wilson's shot from beyond midcourt was off at the buzzer for the team's sixth loss this season by four points or fewer.

Ridgeway-Higgs scored a season-high 13 points, Swint netted 12, Shimou had a season-best 11 off the bench and Wilson added 10 for GBC, which shot 44 percent (24-of-55) from the field.

Tyler scored 19 points, Smith netted 15 and Ritchie added 11 for the Warriors (9-10, 6-6 CACC), who canned 11 three-pointers and posted a 37-29 rebounding edge.

GBC (7-14, 5-7) remains tied with Chestnut Hill (5-7) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot in the South Division with seven games left.

Goldey-Beacom continues its four-game homestand Wednesday against Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 8:00 pm, preceded by the women's 6:00 pm contest.
