Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Solid Effort for Men’s Basketball Falls Short in Setback to Holy Family

An ugly game is just what the doctor ordered for Goldey-Beacom, but a run in the last five minutes cemented the home team's fate in a devastating 64-53 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning led for more than half the game and played one of their best contests of the season, holding a six-point lead midway through the second half and a seven-point cushion in the opening stanza.

The Tigers scored five straight points to close to 40-39 with 7:53 left when Xavier Williams converted an old-fashioned three-point play.  After senior Algeron Torrence (Syracuse, NY) made a layup for GBC, Williams then canned a 3-pointer with 6:34 remaining for a 42-42 tie.

The game was deadlocked at 44 when the critical moments ensued.  Freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) committed a critical turnover and Williams again was on the spot with a steal.  Turhan Griffin got the ball and fed Reggie Charles, who laid it in with 4:54 remaining for a 46-44 contest and the Tigers' first lead in over 29 minutes.

Taite on the next possession committed another turnover and is was Charles who came up with the steal and layup for a four-point game with 4:38 left.

It all started a game-ending 20-9 run in which Holy Family shot 7-of-9 from the floor and forced four turnovers.  Charles scored seven points in the spurt and Eric Fleming added six.

Fleming overall scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the second half with four total 3-pointers, Charles netted 13 points, Marvin Crawford netted 12 and Williams had six of his nine after intermission.  The Tigers (18-4, 12-1 CACC) only shot 33 percent (21-of-63) from the floor that included 23 percent (7-of-31) in the first half, but still clinched a spot in the CACC Tournament.

Junior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) scored 14 points and Torrence had 12 and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for GBC, which shot 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field but could not overcome 22 turnovers.

GBC (7-15, 5-8) falls one game behind Chestnut Hill (6-7) for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot in the South Division with six games left.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Concordia (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 3:00 pm, preceded by the women's 1:00 pm contest.
