Volleyball Battles Hard in 3-0 Loss to Philadelphia U.



Goldey-Beacom dropped a tough first set to Philadelphia U. and could not recover in a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss (24-26, 13-25, 14-25) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The first set was a tightly contested one in which the Lightning looked to have in hand up 23-20.  But the Rams ended it on a 6-1 run with four kills to finish the set, including two from Courtney Wensel.  Philadelphia U. had 17 kills and a .371 hitting percentage in the set with Wensel getting five kills.
 
The Lightning were not too shabby themselves in the first set and that included junior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE) getting nine kills and just one error over 16 attacks.  The home side ended the set with 15 kills and a .306 percentage.
 
But the Rams controlled things the rest of the way, combining for 26 kills and just six errors for a .345 percentage.  Lauren Laucella totaled seven kills in that span with six in the second set to go with an. 857 percentage.
 
McCarthy had 12 kills, leaving her one shy of becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 500 career.  Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) dished 19 assists, fellow freshman Keelin McEleney (Conshohocken, PA) posted nine digs and senior Mackenzie Wilson (Wilmington, DE) added eight for GBC (4-8, 0-5 CACC).
 
Wensel and Laucella had 10 kills apiece, Nina Morvin posted 17 assists, Alexandra Harrington notched 13 and Michele Chai had 15 digs for the Rams (7-4, 3-1), who recorded their fifth straight win.
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against West Chester, starting at 7:00 pm.
