Women’s Tennis Valiantly Battles in 5-4 Loss at Post

Beset by injuries, Goldey-Beacom fought hard at Post in both squads Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener before dropping a 5-4 contest in Middlebury, CT.
 
Going with just five healthy players, Goldey-Beacom immediately was in a 2-0 hole in the best-of-nine tie by defaulting the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles match.  The Lightning did win four of the seven contested matches, but it was not enough.
 
Junior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) notched her 23rd singles victory for GBC (0-1, 0-1 CACC), moving her into sole possession of 10th place in school history.  Her match at third singles was a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Madison Young.
 
Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) got her first win with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at fourth singles over Brianna Miah and fellow freshman Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles vs. Sarah Namazi.
 
Sengl, already sixth in school history in doubles wins, got her 26th today as she and van Zanten recorded a 9-7 triumph at first singles over Young and Liza Dubrovskaya from Post (1-1, 1-0).
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Molloy in a match that has been moved up to an 11:00 am start.
