Softball Falls Twice at Bowie State

Goldey-Beacom fought hard at Bowie State only to be dealt a pair of setbacks, 6-3 and 11-2, in Bowie, MD.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the first inning grabbed a 1-0 lead as senior Asia Ellis (Marlton, NJ) rapped an RBI triple to score sophomore Charlee King (New Castle, DE).  But the Lady Bulldogs erupted in the bottom half for four runs, keyed by Hailey Bethke's three-run double.

The Lightning got two back in the second as a grounder from freshman Kelsey Brandle was misplayed, scoring freshmen Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) and Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) to make it 4-3.  But Bethke had an RBI groundout in the fourth and Emily Lewis scored on an error in the sixth for the final.

Conway and King had two hits apiece for GBC.  Anaheim, CA sophomore Paulynn Mao (0-1) gave up five runs and three hits over three-plus innings with two strikeouts.

Bethke amassed two hits and four RBI for Bowie State.  Nicoleen Ochoa permitted three runs – one earned – and seven hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.

GBC (1-16-1) in game two grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from freshman Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) and tied it at 2-2 in the third on Doyle's run-scoring single.

The Lady Bulldogs (9-15) took the lead for good in the third when Bethke again did her third, lining a two-run triple for a 4-2 lead.  The home team ended things in the fifth with five runs, capped on a grand slam by Cassandra Clayborne.

Mao in game two batted 3-for-3 and now has hits in nine of her last 11 contests to go with her team-leading four multi-hit games.  Doyle had two hits and Mickles was charged with six runs – five earned – and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Clayborne's slam capped a 4-for-4 contest and Bethke went 3-for-3, ending the doubleheader 5-for-6 with six RBI.  Ochoa gave up two runs and eight hits over five innings.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Lincoln (PA) for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
