No. 37 Women’s Tennis Cruises to 9-0 Triumph Over Bowie State

No. 37 Goldey-Beacom only dropped seven games on the afternoon and cruised to its eighth shutout of the season, 9-0 over Bowie State at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

Things started nicely for the Lightning in doubles. Freshman Laura Moreno (Murcia, Spain) and Julia Gutierrez (Quart, Spain) rolled to an 8-0 win vs. Amber Peters and Dainese Smothers, senior Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) notched an 8-2 victory at second doubles over Antonique Johnson and Rahwa Habtemariam with sophomores Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) posting an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles over Channae Manning and Selena Slaughter.

The six singles matches were no contest. Moreno got a 6-1, 6-1 win over Peters at first singles, sophomore Maria Victoria (Totana, Spain) posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory vs. Smothers at second singles and Mrad got a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles over Johnson. Sengl notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Manning, sophomore Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) recorded the same score over Habtemariam at No. 5 singles and senior Anastasia Melnikova (Vladivostok, Russia) had the same result vs. Slaughter at sixth singles.

The eighth shutout surpasses the seven from all of last season. The school record of 10 was set two seasons ago.

Goldey-Beacom on Thursday is home to battle the District of Columbia, starting at 1:00 pm.
