Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Melochick’s Heroics Put Women’s Basketball in the CACC Tournament With 66-60 Triumph at Bloomfield

Freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) scored her team's final nine points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:21 left as Goldey-Beacom clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 66-60 triumph at Bloomfield.

In punching its sixth straight ticket to the CACC Tournament, GBC (11-13, 10-5 CACC) gained a small measure of revenge after falling to Bloomfield in last year's conference quarterfinals.  While fifth-place Chestnut Hill (5-9) still could forge a tie, Goldey-Beacom won both head-to-head meetings this season and would win a potential tiebreaker.

Sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) hit a jumper with 3:35 left to help the Lightning match their largest lead in the second half at that point, 57-53.  The Bears fought back and, following a turnover, got within 57-55 with 2:37 remaining when Tianna Smith hit a layup.

Smith took advantage of another turnover by converting another layup with 2:19 to play for a 57-57 tie and the game's ninth deadlock.  After another turnover for GBC, De'Andra Humphries missed two huge free throws for Bloomfield and freshman Marisa Howard (Reminderville, OH) grabbed the rebound for the visitors.

Goldey-Beacom on the next possession took its time and senior Taylor Leonard (Lake Katrine, NY) got the ball to Melochick, who canned the long ball to put her squad ahead for good.  After Morgan Taylor missed a layup for Bloomfield, her squad fouled four times to put GBC in the bonus.

Melochick made good on all three one-and-one opportunities, hitting six times from the line in the final 22 seconds to secure the Lightning's fourth victory in their last five outings.

Melochick scored 20 points to match her personal best and hit two 3-pointers to give her 46 this season, the seventh-best single-season mark in school history.

Senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) scored 17 points, freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) netted 16 and Lewis hauled in nine rebounds for the Lightning, who owned a 42-29 rebounding edge.

Taylor had 14 points and 10 rebounds with Smith and Ariel Wilson netting 12 apiece for the Bears (11-8, 9-3).

Goldey-Beacom has a week off before its hosts Caldwell next Saturday on Senior Day as part of a doubleheader with the men's squad.  The women's game starts at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
