Women’s Basketball Handed Tough 96-92 Overtime Loss by Caldwell

(Senior Pictures)

Goldey-Beacom showed plenty of resiliency against Caldwell and battled into overtime, but was handed a tough 96-92 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center.

The Lightning were up as many as 12 points in the opening half and never trailed, but only could manage a 50-50 halftime tie.  The second half still was a shootout with senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) hitting a jumper with 30 seconds left, giving GBC an 87-84 lead.

But the Cougars wasted little time.  Instead of a quick two, they went for the tie and it was Nicole Angelo hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 18 seconds remaining for an 87-87 deadlock.

The overtime was far less of an offensive explosion, seeing its first points 1 1/2 minutes in on a free throw from GBC freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ).  Emily Caswell, the league's second-leading scorer, hit two free throws to put Caldwell up before Chukwueze canned a jumper with 2:13 to play for a 90-89 GBC lead.

But the next possession was the most critical with Kristen Drogsler getting the ball for Caldwell and hitting a 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining for a 92-90 contest.  The Cougars got the ball back and ran down the shot clock before Drogsler hit a jumper, making it 94-90 with 71 seconds left.

The Lightning moved to 94-92 on Chukwueze's jumper with 56 seconds left and, after Angelo missed a 3-pointer late in the shot block, got the ball back.  Freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) was fouled on the floor and had a one-and-one, but missed the front end with 10 seconds to play and Caswell got the rebound.

Antoinette Pitta drilled two from the line with six seconds left for the final.

Bruno scored 20 points, Chukwueze had 19 and 11 rebounds, freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) recorded 16 and nine, with sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) and freshman Marisa Howard (Reminderville, OH) adding 10 apiece for Goldey-Beacom.

Senior Taylor Leonard (Lake Katrine, NY) hit two 3-pointers and has 101 career, becoming the fourth player in school history to reach triple digits.

Caswell had 24 points and nine rebounds, Karlie O'Driscoll netted 17, Angelo poured in 16, Lisa Rovatsos scored 13, Pilla netted 12 and Drogsler scored half of her 10 points in overtime for the Cougars.

Goldey-Beacom (11-14, 10-6 CACC) fell to 1 1/2 games behind Holy Family (12-5) for third place in the CACC South Division.  Caldwell (15-10, 12-4) is just one-half game in back of Bloomfield (12-3) for first the North Division.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Wilmington (DE) for its final regular-season home game of the year.  The women's game starts at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.

Before the men's game, GBC will be presenting former cross country coach Brian Conley with the first William Conley Award.  The award will be given annually to someone in athletics who has displayed courage, determination and perseverance the same way Conley has.
