Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls, 88-72, at Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom tried its best to overcome a tough first half, but was handed an 88-72 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Dominican in Orangeburg, NY.

Dominican was on fire in the first half, shooting 53 percent (18-of-34) from the floor with seven 3-pointers and only needing to go to the foul line four times.  GBC shot only 28 percent (9-of-32) in the half and was 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Rebecca Rabeiro came off the bench to score 12 points in the half for the Lady Chargers with Shannon McGill and Deja Gabbidon adding nine apiece.

The Lightning battled in the second half, getting a 3-pointer and a jumper from freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) to close to 56-49 with 12:06 left.  But the visitors were held without a basket for four minutes and a 6-0 run, capped by Lisa Bouffard's layup with 6:38 remaining, gave Dominican a 68-52 lead.

Gabbidon had 25 points and 12 rebounds, Bouffard netted 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Rabeiro added 15 points for the Lady Chargers (14-13, 12-6 CACC), who shot 54 percent (35-of-65) overall.

Senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) had 19 points and nine rebounds, freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) recorded 19 and six, Melochick scored 15 points and freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) had 13 and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Bruno had five assists and now has 131, only seven off of the single-season school record set two seasons ago by Devonne Richardson.  Bruno also hit four 3-pointers and now has 59, just five off the GBC single-season mark set in 2013 by Jacinda Jones.

GBC (12-15, 11-7) now is locked into the fourth seed out of the South Division and will face either Bloomfield or Caldwell in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at 2:00 pm.  The latter two schools face each other Tuesday at Caldwell with the North Division's top seed at stake.

Goldey-Beacom ends the regular season Tuesday at Philadelphia University as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  Game time is 6:00 pm, which precedes the men's 8:00 pm contest.
