Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bruno Sets Assists Record in Women’s Basketball's Stunning 82-73 Victory at Philadelphia U.

Freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) setting a school record was great on its own, but she and her Goldey-Beacom teammates also made the second half something to remember.

Bruno broke the school's single-season assists mark for Goldey-Beacom, which rallied from down 17 points in the second half for a shocking 82-73 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at regionally ranked Philadelphia U.

Down 47-30 with 16:47 remaining, the Lightning rattled off a 30-12 run in just over nine minutes to unbelievably grab a 60-59 lead with 7:33 remaining.  Bruno scored nine points in the spurt and senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) added eight for GBC, which hit seven 3-pointers in that span.

The game remained tight when Bruno hit a big layup with 3:35 to play for a 71-68 GBC lead.  After the Rams came up empty on their end, freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) drilled a 3-pointer for a 74-68 contest with 2:41 remaining.

With the score 76-70, Bruno came up with a big steal and Chukwueze was fouled on the play.  Chukwueze then connected twice from the line with 91 seconds remaining for a 78-70 contest that all but ended things.

The Lightning were on fire in the second half, shooting 64 percent (19-of-30) from the field with nine 3-pointers and holding the Rams to only 43 percent (15-of-35).  Bruno netted 13 points in the half and Chukwueze added 12.

During the frantic half, Bruno established a school record by reaching 141 assists on the season and break the previous mark of 138 set in 2012-13 by Devonne Richardson.  Bruno finished the contest with 10 assists to tie a season best.

Bruno also hit two 3-pointers and has 61 career, just three off the GBC single-season mark set in 2013 by Jacinda Jones.

Bruno scored 17 points for her second double-double of the season and Chukwueze had 18 and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the campaign that includes three in her last four contests.  Freshman Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) scored 13 points off the bench, Melochick netted 11 and sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) added 10.

Alex Heck, Monica Schacker and Mary Newell scored 16 points apiece with Najah Jacobs adding 14 for the Rams (20-8. 14-5 CACC).

Philadelphia U. in the first half shot 53 percent (18-of-34) from the floor and held Goldey-Beacom to only 30 percent (11-of-37) for a 40-28 lead.  Heck scored 12 points in the half and Schacker added 10 for the Rams, who scored the game's first 15 points.

Philadelphia U. entered the contest ninth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Poll.

Goldey-Beacom (13-15, 12-7) is off to the CACC Tournament quarterfinals against Caldwell, which tonight won the top seed out of the North Division with a thrilling 87-82 double-overtime victory over Bloomfield.  Game time Saturday in Caldwell, NJ is 2:00 pm.
