Men’s Basketball Handed 70-65 Loss by Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom battled to the end with its season on the line, but was dealt a 70-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss by Wilmington (DE) at the Jones Center.

The Wildcats held a 52-40 lead with 6:58 left before the Lightning went on an 11-4 run to close to 56-51 with 3:19 left.  Senior Derrick Archie (Wilmington, DE) scored five points in the run and capped it with two free throws.

Wilmington needed to respond and looked to Valentino Thompson, who hit a massive 3-pointer with 3:07 left for a 59-51 contest.

The lead remained eight when GBC used an 8-3 run to move to 64-61 with 35 seconds remaining.  Senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) ended the run by catching the ball in the paint, dribbling outside the three-point arc, faking a defender and canning a triple.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek hit twice from the line to give the visitors a 66-61 lead with 33 seconds remaining before Getz' layup with 20 seconds to play made it a three-point game.  But Sam Sanders hit twice from the line for a five-point game and give Wilmington the final conference tournament spot from the South Division.

Getz did his best with 22 points, only two off his season best, Archie had 13 with senior Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) adding 11 for the Lightning (8-18, 5-12 CACC).

Tyrik Gass had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Ponzo-Meek scored 18 points with Thompson adding 13 for the Wildcats (9-18, 8-10).

Before the game, GBC presented former cross country coach Brian Conley with the first William Conley Award.  The award will be given annually to someone in athletics who has displayed courage, determination and perseverance the same way Conley has.

Goldey-Beacom hits the road Saturday to visit Dominican (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
