Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Near Comeback Falls Short for Men’s Basketball in Tough 81-80 Loss at Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom nearly wiped out a 19-point deficit in the second half, only to fall just short in an 81-80 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Dominican (NY) in Orangeburg, NY.

The Chargers thought they had the game in hand when a 14-4 run gave them a 64-45 lead with 11:32 remaining.  Nick Smith, the conference's second-leading scorer, poured in 11 points in that span and Joe Clinton buried a 3-pointer.

The Lightning refused to fold on the road, going on a 17-6 run in just under six minutes to close to 72-64.  Sophomores Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) and Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) each scored six points in that spurt.

Dominican got the lead to 79-68 with 2:29 to play when GBC began its comeback.  Swint hit twice from the line, Derrick Archie (Wilmington, DE) hit once and fellow senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) buried two with 1:29 remaining for a 79-74 contest.

After John Decker hit once from the line for the Chargers, Getz' jumper with 57 seconds left brought the Lightning within 80-76.  Clinton then went 1-of-2 from the stripe before Getz canned another jumper, making it 81-78 with 44 seconds to play.

Kristopher Hargraves missed the front end of a one-and-one for Dominican and Goldey-Beacom got the rebound.  After Getz was fouled with 35 seconds left, he hit twice from the stripe for an 81-80 game.

Decker then missed twice from the stripe and GBC got the ball back looking for its first lead since late in the opening half.  Senior Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) got a look from beyond the arc, but his 3-point attempt was off.  Swint corralled the rebound, but his follow-up at the buzzer could not go down.

Getz matched his season high with 24 points that included 14 in the second half.  Ridgeway-Higgs netted 16 points, Archie had 11 and 10 rebounds with Swint adding 10 points.

Smith simply was in the zone, scoring 40 points on 16-of-21 shooting that included 23 points after intermission on 11-of-12 shooting.  Gerrel Irvin scored 12 points, Decker netted 11 and Clinton added 10.

Goldey-Beacom ends its season Tuesday at Philadelphia University as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
