Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt 79-61 Loss by Caldwell

(Senior Pictures)

Goldey-Beacom's hopes of reaching the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament took a major hit with a 79-61 loss to Caldwell at the Jones Center.

Caldwell opened a 39-26 halftime lead by shooting a torrid 53 percent (16-of-30) from the field and holding Goldey-Beacom to only 38 percent (11-of-29).  Michael Balkovic had 11 points and six rebounds in the half with Billy McDonald adding seven points.

The Cougars did not let up on the accelerator, using a 10-2 run early in the second half to open a 60-38 lead with 11:02 remaining.  Balkovic again was the man for the visitors, netting five points in that spurt.

Balkovic could not be stopped by scoring 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbing 15 rebounds for the Cougars, who shot 46 percent (27-of-59) overall.  Kevin Walker and Dawan Lighty scored 15 points apiece and McDonald netted 11.

Sophomore Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) poured in 13 points off the bench and senior Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) added 11 for the Lightning, who shot only 40 percent (23-of-58) from the field.

GBC (8-17, 5-11 CACC) sits 1 1/2 games behind Wilmington-DE (7-10) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot out of the South Division.  The Lightning have to defeat the Wildcats when they battle Tuesday at the Jones Center to keep alive their conference-tournament hopes.

That game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.

Before the men's game, GBC will be presenting former cross country coach Brian Conley with the first William Conley Award.  The award will be given annually to someone in athletics who has displayed courage, determination and perseverance the same way Conley has.
