Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short in 66-64 Loss at Philadelphia U.

Goldey-Beacom nearly gutted out a road battle against the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions, but left with a tough 66-64 loss at Philadelphia University.

Goldey-Beacom opened its biggest lead, 21-11, just 9 1/2 minutes into the game and held Philadelphia U. off the scoreboard in the first 2 1/2 minutes.  Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored eight points in that span with fellow junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY), a two-time reigning member of the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, netting five.

The Rams made a charge toward the end of the half to grab a 35-33 lead, shooting 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor over the 20 minutes and 9-for-10 from the line.  Peter Alexis scored 13 points for Philadelphia U. to offset freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netting 10 points for GBC.

Philadelphia U. (7-1, 2-1 CACC) led by as many as 53-38 early in the second half and by 60-49 with 7:21 remaining.  That's when Goldey-Beacom began its comeback, using a 15-3 run over 5 1/2 minutes to grab a 64-63 lead with 1:50 left.

Taite scored seven points in the run, but it was Wilson who provided the dramatics to end it.  Wilson picked the pocket of TJ Huggins and drove in for an uncontested layup to give the Lightning (1-7, 0-2 CACC) their first lead since late in the first half.

Huggins made up for his mistake by hitting one of two free throws with 1:42 left for a 64-64 tie.  With Wilson and Taite each on the bench with five fouls at this point, GBC turned to junior Elijah Tillman (Garnersville, NY) in the post for the lead.  But Tillman had his shot blocked by Peter Alexis and the Rams went the other way.

Tillman then took his turn at the block part by rejecting Alexis with 37 seconds to play and the ball went out of bounds to Philadelphia U.  Kaison Randolph one second later was fouled in the lane and made one of two from the line to give the Rams a 65-64 cushion.

Following a timeout, the Lightning could not convert on several chances.  Swint missed a 3-point attempt from the left wing and sophomore Daniel Cooper (Miami, FL) grabbed the offensive rebound, but had his attempt down low rejected by Alexis.

After Alexis was fouled with 4.6 seconds left, he made the first free throw for a 66-64 margin but missed the second.  Senior Jarrel Lane (Rahway, NJ) grabbed the rebound and dribbled to the right wing, but saw his three-point attempt at the buzzer hit the back iron.

Taite had a solid outing, closing with a season-best 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting over 34 minutes.  Wilson netted 15 points, Swint scored 12 and Tillman added 11 and nine rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 39 percent (24-of-62) from the field.

Alexis had a day with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Rams, who shot 39 percent (21-of-54) from the field.  Kilpatrick and Randolph contributed 18 points apiece.

The Rams enjoyed a decided edge on the foul line, going 21-for-29 with the Lightning only going 12-for-16.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game start at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
