Women’s Basketball Falls Late in 62-54 Loss at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom ran into a buzzsaw in the fourth quarter and saw its lead evaporate in a tough 62-54 loss at reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

Down a lion's share of the first half, GBC outscored Holy Family 19-13 in the third quarter by shooting 8-of-12 from the floor and limiting the home side to only 5-of-13.  Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) scored nine points in that span and fellow sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) added eight to give the Lightning a 43-40 lead.

Holy Family scored the last two points of the third period and then tallied the first six of the fourth for an 8-0 run and a 46-43 lead with 7:17 left.  Abigail Iannotti poured in six points during that run.

After Bruno's jumper brought GBC within 46-45, Kylie Giedemann was just getting warm for Holy Family.  She hit a layup with 6:35 left and then canned a big 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining to give her side a 51-45 cushion.

Bruno kept the Lightning in it thanks to a 3-pointer with 3:58 to play for a 51-48 deficit.  But the Tigers netted the next seven points to grab a 58-48 cushion with 33 seconds left to all but end things.  Giedemann hit another key triple in that spurt before Kasey Woetzel nailed a jumper followed by two free throws.

Giedemann scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, when Holy Family (4-3, 2-0 CACC) outscored Goldey-Beacom 22-11 by shooting 41 percent (7-of-17) from the field.  Woetzel scored 14 points overall, Iannotti had 12 and 12 rebounds with Erin Fenningham adding 10 points.

Bruno again played great for the Lightning, scoring 20 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists.  Bryson had 19 points and nine rebounds with sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) adding 10 points.

GBC (0-8, 0-2) only found itself in a 27-24 hole at halftime despite shooting 33 percent (9-of-27) from the floor, but limited Holy Family to just 30 percent (11-of-37).  Bryson had eight points and five rebounds for the Lightning with Woetzel getting eight points for the Tigers.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is at Philadelphia U. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game starts at 2:00 pm, which precedes the men's 4:00 pm contest.
