Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Handed 72-58 Loss by Adelphi

An early eight-point lead for Goldey-Beacom did not stand as Adelphi scored at least seven straight points on three separate occasions to deal the home side a 72-58 loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) nailed consecutive 3-pointers and fellow sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) made a layup to give the Lightning an 8-0 lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes.

With the score 10-2, the Panthers rattled off the next 12 points to open a 14-10 lead with 1:14 left in the first quarter.  Ashley Gomez was just getting warm, ending the spurt with a pair of jumpers.

Adelphi in the second period took the momentum by netting eight straight points in just under five minutes for a 26-17 lead with 3:40 to play.  Haley Parks scored four points in that run in which the Panthers shot 4-of-9 from the field.

Sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) nailed a big 3-pointer at the end of the first half to pull GBC within 30-25.  But Adelphi came our roaring in the second half by scoring the first seven points for a 37-25 lead, a margin that would be at least seven the rest of the way.  Lauren Buss took her turn by scoring all five of her points in that span.

Gomez scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting and Calli Balfour added 19 and nine rebounds for the Panthers (7-3), who shot 55 percent (16-of-29) from the floor in the second half and 47 percent (29-of-62) overall.

Stefanski scored 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting with five 3-pointers to give her 60 baskets from beyond the arc, which already puts her 10th in school history for the Lightning (2-10).  Bruno, today named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, scored 15 points with Bryson, a two-time reigning CACC Weekly Honor Roll member, adding 13 and 16 rebounds.

For Bryson, it is her third double-double in the last four games, fourth this season and 11th career.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Sunday at Wilmington (DE) as part of a doubleheader with the men's team in Newark.  The women's game starts at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
