Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls, 93-86, to Saint Thomas Aquinas

In a battle of teams that played competitive exhibitions games against Division I squads, Goldey-Beacom could not rally late and was dealt a 93-86 loss by Saint Thomas Aquinas in Orangeburg, NY.

Goldey-Beacom was playing its first game after holding a 15-point lead two days earlier at Copping State before succumbing, 80-73.  Saint Thomas Aquinas more than held its own November 4 at St John's, leaving Queens with a stunning 90-68 triumph.

Tonight's encounter saw GBC desperately looking for its first win of the season.  Despite shooting 48 percent (13-of-27) from the field in the first half, it trailed 41-38 at halftime.  Sophomore Daniel Cooper (Miami, FL) scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting with junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) adding 10, going 5-for-5 from the line.  Chaz Walter poured in 12 points for the Spartans.

The second half was close most of the way, especially when freshman Corey Taite (Parlin, NJ) hit a jumper with 7:39 left to pull Goldey-Beacom within 66-64.  But the Spartans went on an 11-3 run that included a trio of 3-pointers, the last coming from James Mitchell with 4:21 left to make it 77-67.

The Lightning continued to hang around, getting a layup from Wilson with 19 seconds left to make it a 91-86 deficit.  But Walter hit twice from the line for the final.

Wilson did everything he could in his almost perfect night for the Lightning.  He scored 28 points on 8-of-8 shooting, made all four of his three-point attempts and shot 8-for-9 from the foul line.  Wilson is shooting 81 percent (30-for-37) from the line in countable games this season.

Junior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored 16 points in his first countable game of the year, Cooper netted 14 on 6-of-11 shooting, Taite scored 10 and junior Elijah Tillman (Garnersville, NY) added 10 rebounds for the Lightning (0-3), who let a 53-percent shooting night (29-of-55) with 10 three-pointers go to waste.

Mitchell and Shaquille McFarlane scored 21 points apiece, Walter poured in 19 and Jonathan Lawton added for the Spartans (3-1), who shot 53 percent (33-of-63) from the field and took advantage of 41 points off the bench.

Goldey-Beacom continues play in the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament on Saturday against Dowling, starting at 6:00 pm.
