Soccer Teams to Play This Week in the CACC Tournament

Sanchez15-2

Men's Soccer | 11/2/2015 12:00:00 AM

An exciting week of soccer lies ahead for Goldey-Beacom as its men's and women's teams will be in action in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament.

The men are the eighth seed and begin things Monday with a quarterfinal match at top-seeded Wilmington (DE), starting at 2:00 pm in Newark, DE.  The women also are a No. 8 seed and will play Tuesday at No. 1 seed Georgian Court at 2:00 pm in Lakewood, NJ.

A victory for the men puts them in the semifinals on Thursday at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, CT at either noon or 2:30 pm.  A win for the women puts them in the last four on Thursday on the campus of Post University in Waterbury at either 11:00 am or 1:30 pm.

The men's final is Saturday at Post at 11:00 pm and the women's final starts at 1:30 pm.

Please note admission will be charged for all contests.  Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children, senior citizens and students with ID with children under age three admitted free.  There are no complimentary tickets.

The men (7-11, 5-7 CACC) got in after winning three of their last five league games, including a 3-0 pounding of Holy Family last Thursday.  Freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) has been solid with a .660 save percentage to go with three shutouts, Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) has played great at midfield all year and fellow sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA) paces the Lightning with nine points.

The men are making their first CACC Tournament appearance since 2009.  Ironically, it also was an eighth seed that year and played at top-seeded Wilmington (DE) on November 2.

The women (8-9, 5-7) have won six of their last eight games overall and are in the league tournament in consecutive years for the first time since 2003-06.  Sophomore Amy Runciman (Luton, England) is tied for sixth in team history with nine goals, tied for third with 10 assists and fourth with 28 points.  For her career, her 16 assists are tied for third and her 38 points puts her tied for ninth.

Senior Megan Harvis (Delran, NJ) also has impressed this season.  Her nine goals this year puts her in a tie for sixth place in school history, her eighth assists are tied for sixth and her 26 points are fifth.  Her 15 career goals are tied for ninth, her 16 assists are tied for third and her 46 points are eighth.

This marks the first time both squads are playing in the conference tournament in the same year since 2003.  That season, the men captured their only league crown.
