Men’s Basketball Drops 80-76 Contest to New York Tech



Goldey-Beacom saw a 16-point lead go to waste and was handed an 80-76 loss by New York Tech in the season opener as part of the Delaware Express Tip-Off Invitational in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning grabbed their final lead, 59-58, when junior Khalil Keel (Philadelphia, PA) drained two free throws with 7:29 left.  But the Bears scored nine straight points to open a 67-59 cushion with 5:10 remaining thanks to seven points from Kachi Nzerem.
 
Jerrel Green hit a free throw with 2:41 remaining to give New York Tech its biggest lead, 73-63.  But GBC refused to fold, getting a free throw from junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY), a jumper from Keel and a 3-pointer from freshman Corey Taite (Parlin, NJ) for a 73-69 contest with 1:20 left.
 
But New York Tech, which trailed 41-25 late in the first half, shot 7-for-10 from the line the rest of the way with Henrik Davidsen making four free throws to ice it.
 
Wilson scored 18 points in GBC debut, going 16-for-20 from the line over 27 minutes.  Keel netted 17 points off the bench, Taite netted 15 and junior Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) added 10 for the Lightning (0-1).
 
Green ended with 18 points and 16 rebounds off the bench, Nzerem scored 15, Jordan Nanton poured in 12, Masksis netted 11 and Jon Feiler added 13 rebounds for the Bears (1-0), who dominated the paint with a 57-30 rebounding edge.
 
The contest witnessed 63 fouls and seven players foul out.
 
LIU Post won the neutral-site contest, 71-55 over University of the Sciences.
 
Goldey-Beacom continues plays in the Delaware Express Tip-Off Invitational on Sunday against LIU Post at 3:00 pm.  This follows the 1:00 pm contest between U. of the Sciences and New York Tech.
