Women’s Basketball Falls to Stonehill in Season Opener



A stern test was on the docket for Goldey-Beacom's season opener and that produced an 86-61 loss to perennial power Stonehill at the Assumption Tip-Off Classic in Worcester, MA.
 
GBC is coming off a sixth straight trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and welcome back several talented players to the mix.
 
One of those is sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ), last year's CACC Rookie of the Year and second team all-league pick.  She ended the contest with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting with three 3-pointers, giving her 24 straight games with at least 10 points and a 3-pointer.
 
Sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) poured in 14 points with four 3-pointers and junior Quorea Pearyer (Plainfield, NJ) netted seven off the bench for the Lightning (0-1), who shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the floor.
 
Courtney Walsh and Kelly Martin scored 16 points apiece, Paige Marshall netted 13, Maty Diabate poured in 12 and Samantha Hyslip added 10 for the Skyhawks (1-0), who shot 53 percent (36-of-69) from the floor.

The Lightning in the second half shot 48 percent (14-of-29) from the floor and only were outscored, 36-33.  Stefanski netted 11 points in that span and Bruno added nine.
 
Stonehill entered the game as the top-ranked team in the East Region and received votes in the national poll.
 
Goldey-Beacom is back at it Saturday against host Assumption, starting at approximately 6:30 pm.
