Women’s Tennis Headed Back to CACC Tournament with Victory Over Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom overcame adversity and a gritty Caldwell squad to secure its eighth straight trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 6-3 triumph in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (5-3, 4-3 CACC) clinches the fourth seed for the tournament and will face top-seeded Concordia (NY) in the semifinals next Saturday at 10:00 am on the campus of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

Injuries forced the Lightning to only play with five players and go into a quick 2-0 deficit. That was wiped when junior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) and freshman Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Becky Ryan and Sara Riccardi, followed by juniors Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) and Pauline Rozet (Malakoff, France) getting a 9-7 first-doubles victory against Tamara Klimek and Emily Slater from Caldwell (3-10, 0-6).

Mrad gave GBC its first lead of the tie with a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles over Ryan. Minutes later, van Zanten made it a 4-2 contest by closing a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles over Riccardi.

It was van Zanten's 12th singles victory of the season, already one off the school's top 10 list.

The score became 4-3 with two matches left and then it was Rozet at No. 3 singles who clinched both the tie and the berth. Rozet received a battle from Slater and rallied in the second set to notch a 6-1, 6-3 triumph for the clincher and the 99th victory in program history.

Freshman Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) ended things with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over Koumudi Thirunagaru.
