Goldey-Beacom went onto the campus of Chestnut Hill for a big Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match needing a win, but left with a 6-3 loss in Philadelphia, PA.

These foes were all too familiar with each other.  Goldey-Beacom last season won all three meetings, including a 5-3 decision in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  That marked the first head-to-head NCAA Tournament for any sport in school history.

The Lightning today got a victory at third doubles to leave the doubles portion of the tie down 2-1.  It was junior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England), who scored the deciding singles victory in last year's NCAA Tournament match-up, and freshman Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) recording a 9-8 (7-5) win over Hayley Craskey and Julia Bellon at No. 3 doubles.

GBC got two victories in singles, but it was not enough.  Freshman Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) rallied to post a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 triumph at fifth singles over Craskey with Cornejo notching a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Bellon.

Laure-Anne Josso, Lara Scholtze, Iman Williams-Mulesa and Axe Owens all went 2-0 between singles and doubles for the Griffins (7-0, 5-0 CACC).

GBC (3-3, 2-3) sits one match in back of Philadelphia U. (3-2) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot.  These teams meet Wednesday at 3:00 pm in Philadelphia for a match the Lightning need to stay alive in the conference tournament race.
