Women’s Basketball Plays Valiantly in 74-63 Loss at Holy Family

It was yet another solid effort for Goldey-Beacom as it continued to make noise in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference during a tough 74-63 setback at Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning made lots of people take notice in the second half, scoring seven straight points and holding the Tigers off the scoreboard for over five minutes to close to a 49-45 deficit with 10:27 left.  Freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ), named Monday to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, netted five points in that span that included a huge 3-pointer.

Holy Family (9-6, 6-1 CACC) kept deciding to camp out beyond the 3-point arc and ended its drought with 9:19 to go when Jill Conroy hit for a 52-45 margin.  Conroy again came through just over a minute later thanks to a jumper for a nine-point cushion.

After senior Taylor Leonard (Lake Katrine, NY) hit twice from the line for GBC, Kylie Giedemann nailed a 3-pointer for Holy Family and Conroy followed suit with 7:09 left for a 60-47 contest.

Goldey-Beacom (5-11, 4-3) refused to fold, using a 12-5 run in just over 4 1/2 minutes to move to 65-59 with 2:35 to go and still make the outcome in question.  Freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) canned a pair of 3-pointers in that stretch and senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) capped it with a jumper.

However, Conroy continued to kill the Lightning by hitting two free throws with 2:19 remaining before Sarah Pawlak nailed a jumper with 64 seconds left for a 69-59 contest.

Chukwueze had 15 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and fourth this season.  Bruno also scored 15 points and Melochick added 14 for the Lightning, who shot 34 percent (24-of-70) from the field.

Pawlak was a menace for GBC with 17 points and nine rebounds, Conroy scored 16 points, Kylie Giedemann netted 14 and Kasey Woetzel had 13 and seven rebounds for the Tigers, who shot 37 percent (26-of-71) from the floor.

The Tigers in the first half used an 11-2 run in just over three minutes to open a 35-24 lead with 3:47 left.  Kylie Giedemann netted four points in that spurt and her sister Kelly Giedemann added three for Holy Family.

Chukwueze, Melochick and freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) netted eight points in the opening half for GBC.  Holy Family shot 43 percent (16-of-37) in the half to open a 42-32 lead.

Goldey-Beacom finally concludes its four-game road trip Saturday at Wilmington (DE) as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's contest in Newark, DE is at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's game at 3:00 pm.
