Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Melochick’s Second-Half Barrage Leads Women’s Basketball to 75-66 Victory at Wilmington (DE)

Freshman Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) scored 18 of her season-high 20 points in the second half that included four massive 3-pointers as Goldey-Beacom pulled away for a 75-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Victory at Wilmington (DE) in Newark.

Wilmington, which was down 11 points in the first half, used a 12-1 run early in the second to open a 47-37 lead with 13:17 left.  Zameria Jones scored six points in that run and Tenicia Spence ended things with a 3-pointer.

That's when the Lightning (6-11, 5-3 CACC) began to chip away, getting two free throws from senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) with 11:56 left and two more 13 seconds later for a 50-44 deficit.

After Jones hit a layup for a 52-44 margin, Melochick began to take over.  Standing wide open in the right corner, she canned her first 3-pointer in the run for a 52-47 deficit with 9:59 remaining.

The next possession saw Melochick again open in the same spot and she connected for a 52-50 contest.  After Tashea Plummer committed an offensive foul, the ensuing possession saw Melochick again unguarded from what today was her favorite location and she hit again for a 53-52 lead.

The squads traded layups and Lightning freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) hit once from the line with 7:53 to play for a 56-54 lead.  After another empty possession for the Wildcats, Melochick this time decided to try the right wing and she buried another triple for a 59-54 margin with 6:52 left.

When the dust finally settled, GBC had taken control with a 29-7 run over 9 1/2 minutes for a 69-57 lead with 2:58 left.  Melochick ended the run with 14 points and Chukwueze added nine for the Lightning, who shot 44 percent (12-of-27) from the field in the second half and 43 percent (24-of-56) overall.

Bruno, named last week to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, also had a solid outing with 15 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals.  Chukwueze amassed 13 points and freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) added 10 and seven rebounds for GBC.

Goldey-Beacom's bright future was no more apparent than in the fact that 51 of the squad's points today were scored by freshmen.

The Lightning closed with 10 three-pointers to fall one short of their season best set December 15 vs. Lincoln (PA).  Melochick hit four 3-pointers for the second straight game and now has 30 this season, trailing Bruno by one for the team lead.

Spence and Jones scored 20 points apiece, Cari Callaway netted 10 and Jennifer Carr hauled in 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (3-12, 1-7), who shot only 38 percent (13-of-34) from the floor after intermission.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game begins at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
