Women’s Basketball Uses the Long Ball in 86-75 Triumph Over Chestnut Hill



Goldey-Beacom again used the three-point shot to its advantage and distanced itself from Chestnut Hill in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with an 86-75 victory at the Jones Center.
 
The Lightning took control in the second half with a 19-6 run in just over seven minutes, grabbing a 73-56 lead with 4:49 left.  Marisa Howard (Reminderville, OH) scored eight points in that span and fellow freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) added five.
 
GBC shot 8-of-12 from 3-point range in the second half with Howard, Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, PA) and fellow freshman Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) each hitting twice.  The Lightning for the game canned 11 to equal their season high and cracked double figures for the third time this season.
 
Overall in the second half, GBC shot 59 percent (19-of-32) from the floor with senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) netting 12 points and Howard adding 10.
 
Chukwueze closed the game with 20 points and 12 rebounds over 33 minutes for her fifth double-double this season and third in the last four games.  Bruno scored 14 points, Melochick had 13 and seven rebounds with Howard contributing 10 points.
 
Tiffany Turner had 17 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Shayla Felder scored 14 points for the Griffins, who shot 42 percent (28-of-67) from the field and were forced into 14 turnovers.
 
Goldey-Beacom (7-11, 6-3 CACC) now holds a 3 1/2 game lead over Chestnut Hill (4-11, 2-6) for fourth place in the CACC South Division.  The top four teams in each of the two divisions advance to the conference tournament.
 
Goldey-Beacom does not play again until next Wednesday, when it visits U. of the Sciences as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game in Philadelphia begins at 6:00 pm, which precedes the men's 8:00 pm contest.
