Women’s Basketball Handed 72-62 Loss at USciences

Goldey-Beacom fought hard against first-place University of the Sciences, but surrendered a late run for a tough 72-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Philadelphia, PA.

USciences (13-4, 9-1 CACC) scored the final 12 points of the first half in just over five minutes to open a 32-24 lead.  Jessica Sylvester, who netted five points in that burst, ended the half with 10 points and Sarah Abbonizio added nine.

The second half continued to be a tussle and was made interesting when the Lightning (7-12, 6-4) used a 7-2 run to close to 57-53 with 2:33 remaining.  Freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) scored five points in the spurt and sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) capped it with a jumper.

But the Devils took over from there, scoring the next six points in just over a minute to gain a 63-53 cushion with 78 seconds to play.  Laura Trisch and Brianne Traub each made layups before Abbonizio's layup all but ended things.

Senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) scored 16 points with Bruno and freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) netting 11 apiece for the Lightning, who shot 47 percent (15-of-32) from the field in the second half but only 39 percent (24-of-62) for the game.

Traub had 22 points and 13 rebounds, Sylvester netted 17 points, Trisch scored 12 and Abbonizio contributed 11 off the bench for the Devils, who shot 50 percent (12-of-24) from the floor in the second half and 44 percent (24-of-55) overall.

USciences ran its winning streak to 11 games with its last loss coming to GBC, 79-61 on December 9.
