Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed Gut-Wrenching 68-65 Loss at Nyack

Goldey-Beacom held an eight-point lead early in the second half, but surrendered a late 3-pointer and was handed a stunning 68-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Nyack in Nyack, NY.

A 33-32 Lightning cushion at halftime quickly turned into a 40-32 bulge within the first two minutes.  Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) canned a 3-pointer to open the burst and fellow senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) ended the spurt with a layup.

But the Warriors began to establish their presence in the post, getting four consecutive layups to move to a 40-40 tie with 16:14 left.  Will Robinson was the biggest culprit, hitting three of those layups.

In a second half that saw six ties and five lead changes, no one held more than a four-point lead the rest of the way.  Sophomore Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) gave the Lightning a 65-63 lead with 2:28 to go, hitting a jumper that gave his squad momentum.

Chris Hampton missed a 3-pointer for Nyack and Goldey-Beacom came back seeking to make it a two-possession game.  Getz looked like he would do that as he drove to the basket, but Nick Moore came out of nowhere for a blocked shot that saved the game for the Warriors.

Moore then drove to the goal to draw a foul with 74 seconds left and hit twice from the stripe for a 65-65 tie.

GBC then came back on the other end and was called for an illegal screen with 44 seconds remaining that gave Nyack its chance to take the lead.  With the shot clock running down, the Warriors elected not to go inside and it was Khalid Samuels who banked in a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to go for a 68-65 contest.

The Lightning looked for the tie, but turned over the ball and the Warriors dribbled out the clock.

Steinbergin poured in a season-high 22 points, four off his career best, on 8-of-10 shooting and canned a season-best six 3-pointers that is one off his personal high.  Getz had 12 rebounds, six rebounds and six assists with senior Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill, NJ) adding 10 points.

The Lightning (4-9, 1-4 CACC) could not take advantage of shooting 63 percent (12-of-19) from the field in the second half, 57 percent (24-of-42) for the game and eight 3-pointers overall.

Hampton scored 18 points, Moore had 17 and 10 rebounds with Robinson adding 11 points for the Warriors (3-9, 2-3), who were held to 41 percent shooting (13-of-32) in the second half but grabbed 15 offensive rebounds overall.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Wednesday at Holy Family as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game in Philadelphia starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
