Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Free Throw Shooting and Tough Play Carry Men’s Basketball to 81-71 Triumph at Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom needed a complete team effort to get back in the win column and got just that, scoring 51 points in the second half for an 81-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Wilmington (DE) in Newark.

In a game full of ebbs and flows, it was the Lightning's final run that proved to be the difference.  The visitors used a 12-2 burst in just over three minutes to open a 56-44 lead with 9:15 left.  Sophomore Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ), who again had a solid effort for the GBC, scored five points in that run and senior Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill, NJ) added four.

The Wildcats (3-13, 2-6 CACC) then constantly put the Lightning (5-10, 2-5) on the line in the last 7 1/2 minutes in an attempt to make it a ball game.  The strategy backfired as the visitors went 23-for-26 from the charity stripe during that time and could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.  Senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA) was the right man on the line from GBC's standpoint, going 10-for-10 during that span.

Getz ended 10-for-11 overall from the stripe to match his season-best performance from December 13 at Kutztown.

Overall, Goldey-Beacom shot 29-of-34 from the line that amazingly is not the team's season high.  The Lightning hit 30 free throws in the season-opening victory November 14 over Queens (NY).

Gebhart again was too much in the post with 19 points, Getz poured in 17, Swint netted 14 and freshman Daniel Cooper (Homestead, FL) had 12 and eight rebounds.  The Lightning in the second half shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the floor en route to hitting 49 percent (24-of-49) overall.

Sam Sanders poured in 19 points off the bench, Valentino Thompson scored 18 points and Kevin Ohen added eight for the Wildcats, who shot 42 percent (28-of-66) from the field and only were 7-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game begins at 8:00 pm, following the women's 6:00 pm contest.
