WILMINGTON, Del. - Led by three hits and three runs scored by senior utility player
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.), Goldey-Beacom College (9-30, 6-20) finished its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule by splitting a doubleheader against Dominican College (18-23, 15-11) on Senior Day at the Jackson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Lightning, who were playing their penultimate games of the 2014 season, used a strong start to earn a 7-5 victory over the Chargers in the first game. It marked the Lightning's first win over the Chargers since an 8-5 verdict on Mar. 21, 2006, snapping a 14-game losing streak against their conference opponents.
However, Dominican rallied in the second game to earn a split with a 5-3 triumph in the nightcap, marking the Chargers' fifth win in the last six games.
In the first game, the Lightning surged to a quick 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After an RBI single by freshman outfielder
Charlee King (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 edge, freshman utility player
Paulynn Mao (Rancho Alamitos H.S./Anaheim, Calif.) extended the advantage by driving in two more runs with a single up the middle.
Junior utility player
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) increased the margin to 5-0 when she hit a two-run triple to right center field before an RBI ground out by sophomore designated player
Taylor Ewing (North Dorchester H.S./Hurlock, Md.) allowed Ellis to score.
The Chargers trimmed the margin to 6-1 when junior outfielder
Jacqueline Gonzalez (William Howard Taft H.S./San Antonio, Texas) hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs in the top of the second inning.
But, the Lightning extended the margin to 7-1 in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) hit an RBI double to right field with two outs in the frame.
Trailing by a six-run margin, the Chargers began their comeback bid in the top of the fourth inning when freshman infielder
Lisa Bouffard (Wallkill Senior H.S./Wallkill, N.Y.) drove in a run with a ground out to shortstop.
In the top of the seventh inning, Dominican continued its comeback attempt by scoring three times to trim the deficit to 7-5. After freshman outfielder
Elontay Collins (Serra H.S./San Diego, Calif.) drove in two runs with a single to center field, freshman infielder
Shannon Truppi (Immaculate Conception H.S./Little Ferry, N.J.) closed the gap to 7-5 when she hit an RBI single to center field with two outs.
However, senior pitcher
Courtney Dolson (Gloucester H.S./Gloucester, N.J.) was able to record the final out and preserve the Lightning's two-run victory.
In the second game, the Chargers overcame a slow start by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead they did not relinquish. Sophomore utility player
Shannon Haukap (Meadowdale H.S./Edmonds, Wash.) scored on a fielding error by senior shortstop
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) for the game's first run with one out in the frame.
After Truppi extended Dominican a 2-0 edge with a single to left field, sophomore outfielder
Brianna Arends (Bridgewater-Raritan H.S./Raritan, N.J.) upped the advantage to 3-0 when she reached on a fielder's choice with a bunt to Peters, who attempted to get a runner out at home plate.
A double down the left field line by Gonzalez increased the margin to 5-0 with two outs in the inning.
The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when King drove in a run with a double to center field before adding another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ewing.
In the seventh inning, Goldey-Beacom closed the gap to 5-3 when King scored on an Ellis ground out after she led off the inning with a double down the left field line. But, the Lightning were unable to get any closer.
While Peters led the Lightning with her three hits and three runs, King added a three-hit effort, including a pair of doubles, while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Meanwhile, Ellis contributed three hits with three runs batted in.
Truppi and Collins each drove in two runs for the Chargers while Gonzalez tallied three hits with three runs batted in.
The Lightning will finish their 2014 season on Monday, Apr. 28 by hosting Mercy College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
