Game 2WILMINGTON, Del. – Although Goldey-Beacom College senior utility player
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) ended her career in record-setting fashion, the Lightning (9-32) were unable to finish their season on a winning note as Mercy College (19-30) swept a non-conference doubleheader against the Lightning at the Jackson Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.
The Mavericks, who ended the regular season with an eight-game win streak, claimed the first game by a 10-1 margin in a five-inning affair before earning the sweep with a 10-2 triumph in six innings in the nightcap.
Peters, who was one of four seniors playing the final games of their career, set the Goldey-Beacom single-season record by earning her seventh triple of the year in the bottom of the sixth inning during the second game. It was Peters' 11th triple of her career, also a school record.
In the first game, the Mavericks sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After senior first baseman
Kelly Bentson (Brewster H.S./Brewster, N.Y.) hit a two-run triple down the right field line, junior infielder
Megan Johnson (Seton Catholic Prep H.S./Gilbert, Ariz.) blasted her 10th home run of the season with a two-run shot to left center field for a four-run advantage.
Junior infielder
Jackie Couillard (Wolcott H.S./Wolcott, Conn.) upped the Mercy margin to 5-0 when she hit an RBI single to right field with two outs in the top of the second inning.
The Lightning narrowed the margin to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning when senior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) hit a run-scoring single through the left side.
But, the Mavericks put the game out of reach by scoring five unanswered runs for a 10-1 advantage. They scored four times in the top of the fourth inning, including a two-run double by senior utility player
Ashley Johnstone (John F. Kennedy H.S./Bellmore, N.Y.), before adding a single run in the top of the fifth inning.
Senior
Jessica Simpson (Highland H.S./Gilbert, Ariz.) entered the game in relief of senior
Mary Sieber (Massapequa H.S./Massapequa Park, N.Y.) to retire the Lightning in order in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the victory.
The Lightning took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Peters hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the inning.
However, the Mavericks responded by scoring six runs in the top of the third inning. Couillard tied the game at 1-1 with an infield single with one out before a bases loaded walk by Bentson gave Mercy a 2-1 advantage.
After a single by freshman infielder
Julie Gross (Middletown North H.S./Port Monmouth, N.J.) extended the gap to 3-1, the Mavericks took advantage of a wild pitch and a fielding error by the Lightning to make it a 5-1 cushion.
A fielder's choice by senior infielder
Cristina Lisboa (Saint Catherine Academy/Bronx, N.Y.) increased the margin to 6-1 with two outs in the inning.
After Johnstone upped the advantage to 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double to center field, the Mavericks added three more runs in the fifth inning for a commanding 10-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lightning ended the Mavericks' surge when Peters hit a triple down the left field line to score Foster and trim the deficit to 10-2. However, the Lightning were unable to get any closer as Simpson retired sophomore catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) with a ground out to end the game.
Couillard led the Mavericks to the doubleheader sweep by going six-for-eight with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Meanwhile, senior outfielder
Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield H.S./New Fairfield, Conn.) added five hits with four runs scored.
Peters and Foster combined to drive in all three of the Lightning's runs in the final games of their college career while Foster added a pair of hits.
