Haylee Williams (Carlsbad H.S./Carlsbad, Calif.) had four hits and drove in four runs to lead Felician College (15-17, 7-10) to a sweep of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader over Goldey-Beacom College (7-22, 4-14) at the Golden Falcons' Matera Field on Saturday afternoon.
After defeating the Lightning by a 6-4 margin in the first game, the Golden Falcons jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first three innings of the nightcap before Goldey-Beacom tried to come back with four runs in the final four innings. However, Felician held off the Goldey-Beacom comeback bid to sweep the doubleheader with an 8-5 victory.
The Golden Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the first game before Goldey-Beacom answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game. An RBI double by freshman utility player
Paulynn Mao (Rancho Alamitos H.S./Anaheim, Calif.) trimmed the deficit to 2-1 before senior infielder
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) tied the game with a run-scoring single to center field.
But, Felician regained its advantage in the bottom of the second inning when Williams blasted her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to center field which gave the Golden Falcons a 5-2 lead.
The Lightning narrowed the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning. After senior utility player
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) drove in a run with a single to left field, freshman outfielder
Charlee King (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score senior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.).
However, the Golden Falcons added an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Williams.
In the second game, the teams traded a run in the first inning before Felician erupted for seven runs in the second inning for a commanding 8-1 advantage. The Golden Falcons took advantage of four Lightning errors while collecting four hits, including a two-run triple by junior catcher
Mercedes Montanez (Rancho Buena Vista H.S./Vista, Calif.).
But, the Lightning answered with a run in the fourth inning on a double by sophomore utility player
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) with two outs. They added two more runs in the sixth inning when King hit a double to right center field along with a run-scoring single by Ellis.
In the top of the seventh inning, King drove in another run with a single to left field. However, the Lightning were unable to get any closer.
While Williams led the Golden Falcons to the doubleheader sweep, Montanez drove in a pair of runs while collecting two hits.
King posted a four-hit effort in the sweep for the Lightning while driving four runs. She also scored a pair of runs for Goldey-Beacom, which is in the middle of a 13-game road trip.
The Lightning will visit Millersville University for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, Apr. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
